Touch of Evil
New York Times released this today.  A collection of 13 shorts featuring some of the greatest actors and actresses working today. Some are brilliant (Gosling, Pitt, and Mara stand out to me), while some border on comedy — Clooney’s especially. Beautiful cinematography throughout by Ross Richardson and great music by Ali Heinwein. Definitely worth 10 minutes of your time.

The Atypical Approach: On Jim Jarmusch’s Warped...
A western from the twisted mind of one of America’s great independent filmmakers, Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man is a grand deviation from typical western conventions and expectations.  Jarmusch reaches the absolute outer limits of what is permissible (in this case, permissible meaning the ideas and conventions that make a western a western) in this genre.  This dreamlike journey is characterized by his...

A Mathematician’s Shortcomings. Descartes’ Faulty...
Descartes lays the groundwork for mathematics as an example of truth a priori in Meditation One (Concerning Those Things That Can Be Brought into Doubt), but not without an asterisk. The outlier is that if “God is a deceiver,” we cannot be certain of anything mathematical because a deceitful God may just be making them appear as absolute truths. To counter this, Descartes presents his Ontological...

On Marx's Use of Hyperbolic Statements Regarding...
“The worker becomes all the poorer the more wealth he produces, the more his production increases in power and size. The worker becomes an ever cheaper commodity the more commodities he creates. The devaluation of the world of men is in direct proportion to the increasing value of the world of things.” – Karl Marx, Estranged Labor               While some may not view Political Economy as a...

On Nietzschian Methodology
“Now in the first place it is obvious to me that the actual genesis of the concept “‘good’” is sought and fixed in the wrong place by this theory: the judgment “good” does not stem from those to whom “‘goodness”’ is rendered! Rather it was “’the good’” themselves, that is the noble, powerful, higher-ranking, and high-minded who felt and ranked themselves and their doings as good, which is to...
